Thailand’s future: a country of tourism, medicine and finance

Thailand's future

Thailand’s prime minister has unveiled ambitious plans to develop the country as a tourism, medical, agricultural and financial centre.

Prime Minister Settha Thavisin has unveiled his own vision to transform Thailand into a sustainable centre for tourism, health and wellness, agriculture, food processing, aviation, logistics, future mobility, financial services and the digital economy.

Speaking at Government House, the Prime Minister said Thailand’s potential has been eclipsed by the political polarisation of the past few years, but after six months in power, peace and reconciliation have been achieved, signalling a good start and that “a light has been lit in Thailand”, Thai Public Broadcasting Service reported.

The prime minister said the government is committed to making Thailand a regional leader by leveraging the country’s rich natural resources, tourist attractions, pleasant weather, and people’s potential.

According to Seththi, becoming a regional tourism centre means investing in tourism promotion and embracing secondary tourist provinces, promoting muay Thai, festivals, visa-free entry and Thai cuisine, which Thailand intends to make elements of “soft power”.

As Thailand is known for medical services, qualified medical personnel, reasonable medical costs and a plan to increase the number of medical professionals, the Prime Minister said Thailand is also fully prepared to become a centre for health and medical services.

Thailand has a developed agricultural sector and food industry. Given the popularity of Thai cuisine, the government intends to modernise the processing of farm products,” said Settha, saying Thailand has the potential to become the agricultural and food hub of the region.

According to the prime minister, Thailand is strategically located, surrounded by 280 million people in neighbouring countries. Thailand also has the potential to become a regional aviation and logistics hub due to its existing connectivity and the government’s plans to expand transport infrastructure, such as rail and road expansion and the proposed land bridge project.

The prime minister said the government plans to invite world-class financial institutions to set up bases in Thailand and invest in developing blockchain technology infrastructure. Restrictions on digital assets will be lifted to prepare Thailand to become the region’s financial centre,” Settha said.

After learning why global stars such as Taylor Swift do not include Thailand in their world tours, the Prime Minister also promised to bring superstars to Thailand. The Prime Minister emphasised the economic benefits of investing in superstar concerts, pointing to the potential to attract foreign visitors and increasing spending in sectors ranging from hotels to tourism activities and roadside pork barbecue stalls.

However, the Prime Minister noted that the plans could not only be realised with the cooperation and support of the Thai people.
