Bangkok’s traffic will be handled by artificial intelligence

A pilot project using artificial intelligence has been launched in Thailand’s capital city to tackle the problem of heavy traffic in Bangkok.

The Thai government has launched the ‘Ratchaprasong Model’, a project that uses artificial intelligence technology to tackle traffic congestion in Ratchaprasong, a busy business district that is also a popular tourist destination in the Thai capital, reports Matichon.

The project’s launch in Ratchaprasong district was led by Puangpet Chunlayad, Minister from the Prime Minister’s Office, and Deputy Minister Warawut Yanjareon. The inauguration was supported by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Tourist Police Bureau, the Royal Thai Police, and local shopping centre managers.

The initiative aims to optimise traffic flow at intersections and improve tourist safety in the area and along Ratchadamri Street. The traffic management strategy includes a system powered by artificial intelligence developed by the Bangkok administration.

The system uses CCTV cameras to detect and monitor vehicles, particularly taxis, buses and tuk-tuks, parked in front of shopping centres for more than three minutes. Such parking violations are the leading cause of significant traffic congestion in the area.

“CCTV footage capturing the number plates of the vehicles is used as evidence to issue fines. The fines are then sent to the vehicle owners for payment.”

“There is no possibility of constantly sending police to chase illegally parked cars,” said Bangkok Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon, who promised to extend the intelligent system to the rest of Bangkok’s neighbourhoods.

Minister Puangpet stressed that the project is a crucial initiative of Prime Minister Settha Thavisin to develop the tourism sector and involves cooperation with various public and private organisations in the Ratchaprasong Junction area.

Puangpet said local transport services and businesses will undertake to coordinate parking, drop-off points and waiting areas for passengers to reduce traffic congestion further.

An artificial intelligence-based traffic surveillance system is among five strategies being implemented to tackle congestion in Bangkok.

Additional measures include installing warning signs for tourists and residents against using illegal transport services, strictly enforcing traffic rules against violators and imposing social sanctions.
