Monk charged with embezzlement of HIV hospice funds and money laundering after resigning as church rector.

Luang Phor Alongkot, a Buddhist monk known for founding a hospice for people living with HIV/AIDS in Thailand, was arrested in Bangkok on Tuesday on charges of misusing donations intended for the project. Luang Phor Alongkot, also known as Phra Ratcha Wisuthiprachanath, has been charged with embezzlement, negligence, and money laundering, along with Seksan Sapsaksukul, who was involved in raising funds for the project.

Alongkot, 65, was taken to the crime-suppression department’s headquarters in Bangkok on Tuesday, where he was forced to undergo defrocking before formal charges could be brought against the monks. Alongkot has denied any wrongdoing. Jarungkat Pankaew, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, stated that the investigation was ongoing.

Initially, the monk cooperated well with the police and voluntarily agreed to relinquish his monastic vows. He understands the difference between Buddhist discipline and the legal.

Process,” Jarungkat told reporters. “I told him that he did things that benefit people and other things that were illegal, and he will have to bear the consequences.” Alongkot resigned last week as abbot of Wat Phra Bat Nampho temple in the central province of Lopburi after weeks of speculation about possible misuse of donations intended for the care of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The hospice was founded in 1992 and was considered a pioneering humanitarian project. However, with the advent and spread of antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV, as well as increased public awareness of AIDS, its importance gradually diminished. Alongkot has responded to the changing situation by extending treatment to people suffering from other serious illnesses and expanding the temple’s facilities.

The temple also runs various charities that fund the education of underprivileged children. The Luang Phor Alongkot case raises important questions about transparency and accountability in the management of charitable donations, particularly in religious organizations. Such incidents can undermine public trust in charities and negatively impact the performance of organizations that genuinely seek to help those in need. Strong oversight and proper management of donations are essential to maintaining the credibility and effectiveness of charitable initiatives.

The investigation is ongoing, and the public is awaiting the results, which will help clarify the situation and determine whether any violations actually occurred.
