The National Institute of Astronomical Research of Thailand (Narit) reports that the Perseid meteor shower, also known as the Mother’s Day meteor shower, will be observed by residents across the country on the night of August 12-13.
According to Suparerk Karuechanon, director of Narit’s Astronomical Education and Public Relations Department, the meteor shower will peak on Monday evening, August 12, starting at 11 p.m. and last until dawn Tuesday. Up to 100 meteors per hour are expected during this period.
Experts recommend choosing a location with minimal light pollution for the best viewing. “The best way to watch the meteor shower is to lie down and look with the naked eye in the direction of the meteors falling,” Karouehanon advises. The phenomenon will be visible across the country with good weather and clear skies.
The Perseids are associated with the Swift-Tuttle comet and are observed annually from July 17 to August 24, with peak activity on August 12-13. Interestingly, the name “Perseids” comes from the constellation Perseus, from which the meteors seem to fly out.
Experts emphasize that the meteor shower is a natural phenomenon that does not affect Earth. However, it provides a unique opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts and curious observers to enjoy the beauty of the night sky.
The peak of the meteor shower coincides with Mother’s Day in Thailand, making it a particularly symbolic and memorable event for locals.
