Thailand intends to enhance the country’s role in the international arena and expand the kingdom’s ability to participate in creating a new world order.

The Bangkok Post newspaper reported, citing government spokesman Chai Vacharonke, that the Cabinet has approved a draft of an official letter stating Thailand’s intention to become a member of the BRICS interstate grouping.

Thailand is pushing ahead with a plan to join the intergovernmental organisation BRICS, which is beginning to expand well beyond its founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates officially joined the BRICS bloc on 1 January. Thailand is currently in the next queue of 15 countries being considered for admission to the bloc.

According to government spokesman Chai Wacharonke, the letter said Thailand realises the importance of multilateralism and the growing role of developing countries in the international arena. The country’s vision is in line with the BRICS principles.

The letter said that BRICS membership would benefit Thailand in many ways, including enhancing the country’s role in the international arena and expanding the kingdom’s ability to create a new world order.

The government spokesman said the BRICS group had invited non-BRICS countries wishing to join to attend the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan from 22 to 24 October.

Participating in the event will allow Thailand to accelerate the process of joining the organisation and strengthen its role as a leading player among developing countries,’ Chai Wacharonke added.

Thailand has also notified its desire to apply to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which brings together 38 of the world’s most developed economies.
