Thailand and Cambodia introduce mutual restrictions on visa validity periods for citizens.

The authorities of Thailand and Cambodia have introduced mutual restrictions on visa validity periods for citizens of neighboring countries. Cambodia has set a seven-day limit on the length of stay for Thai citizens arriving by land. In response, Thailand has taken similar steps with regard to Cambodian citizens arriving in the country by land.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balanchura said that the length of stay for Thais in Cambodia has been reduced from 14 to 7 days for passport holders and from 15 to 7 days for border pass holders. Thailand, in turn, has limited the stay of Cambodians to 7 days, previously 60 days for passport holders and 15 days for border pass holders arriving by land.

For air travelers, the conditions remain more favorable: Cambodians can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days. Cambodia, as planned, will increase the length of stay for Thai citizens arriving by air from 14 to 60 days. Nikorn Dej Balanakura emphasized that the duration of the mutual visa measures has not been set, and the possibility of extending them will be discussed when the situation improves.

‘Neither side has determined how long this will continue. I think both sides can discuss an extension when the situation improves. At present, this issue is not a priority,’ he said.

In addition, Thai security authorities intend to appeal to the Thai National Security Council with a proposal to cut off electricity and internet connections in the border areas of Cambodia, where casinos and fraud centers are located. The issue of restricting the supply of goods that can be used in technological crimes or transnational crimes is being considered.

The Foreign Ministry representative expressed hope for a peaceful and long-term settlement of differences through bilateral mechanisms, including a joint border committee meeting scheduled in five days. These measures are being taken against the backdrop of continuing tensions between the two countries over territorial disputes.

At the same time, the question of the possible impact of these measures on tourist flows from Russia to Thailand and Cambodia remains open. Thailand is traditionally a popular destination among Russian tourists, who are attracted by its picturesque beaches, rich culture, and affordable prices. Restrictions on the length of stay may affect the choice of those tourists who prefer long trips.

It should also be noted that restrictions on electricity and internet supply may affect Russians living or doing business in the border areas of Cambodia. Therefore, it is important to monitor the situation and take into account possible changes in visa policy and trade relations between the two countries.
