The famous romantic comedy Mother of the Bride was filmed in Phuket resorts and is a love letter to the charming island of Phuket in Thailand.
Minor Hotels, operator of the award-winning Anantara resorts, invites travellers worldwide to ‘relax like the cast of the popular Netflix film Mother of the Bride and experience the glamour of Anantara’s Phuket resorts’ in Thailand.
The press release said, ‘Experience the sunny world of the chart-topping film “Mother of the Bride” and make dreams come true in the locations that captivated more than 26.7 million Netflix viewers worldwide on its debut weekend.’
‘Directed by Mark Waters, known for his work on Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, the romantic comedy is set in Phuket’s Anantara Layan Phuket Resort and Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas. And it’s a loving message to the enchanting island of Phuket in Thailand.’
Minor Hotels also issued a press release earlier this month stating, ‘Thailand has established itself as an attractive destination for Hollywood and international filmmakers, utilising its stunning locations to boost tourism and support the local economy.’
In 2022, the Thai government abolished income tax for foreign talent for five years, adding to an already attractive film incentive scheme. Since then, the programme has been improved and now offers foreign filmmakers a cash rebate of up to 20%, and Phuket has become a prime location for foreign film shoots.
Tourism authorities, the government, and local companies are confident that this investment will pay dividends. They expect a surge in visitor numbers and a significant increase in spending as international films such as Mother of the Bride introduce Thailand to new audiences.
Mother of the Bride, which premiered on Netflix on 9 May, stars Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove and Benjamin Bratt. The film follows Lana, whose daughter Emma returns from overseas with news of her upcoming wedding in Thailand. This creates a chain of comedic events, especially since Lana is about to marry her ex’s son.
William Heinecke, founder and chairman of Minor International, at whose resorts the film is being shot, shared his enthusiasm, ‘Thailand is skilfully exploiting the “film set” phenomenon of tourists coming to places featured in films and TV shows.’
‘Our goal is to showcase Thailand as a vibrant film hub that enriches the local economy while offering tangible cost and efficiency benefits for film crews. When Thailand thrives, we all win,’ William added.
