This week, Thailand observes Makha Bucha Day, a Buddhist holiday on the full moon of the third lunar month.
In 2025, it falls on Wednesday, February 12. Makha Bucha honors the occasion when 1,250 of Buddha’s disciples spontaneously came together to receive his teachings, which encompass the essential principles of Buddhism: refrain from evil, engage in good deeds, and purify the mind.
On this day, individuals go to Buddhist temples to partake in rituals, provide food to monks, meditate, and participate in a candlelight procession.
Many also choose to forgo alcohol and other vices as a mark of respect and contemplation. By Thai law, the sale of alcohol is PROHIBITED on religious holidays.
Consequently, bars will be closed, and sales at convenience stores will also be forbidden from midnight to midnight on Wednesday, totaling 24 hours. Violation of this law may result in significant fines and lengthy prison sentences.
