As part of a significant crackdown on illegal gambling related to the 2024 event, Thai authorities have apprehended 126 individuals. UEFA European Football Championships.
Over the weekend, an operation was carried out to identify individuals who were involved in illegal gambling during matches. Six organizers, 117 gamblers and three ticket agents were arrested.
Most of the arrests were made at nightclubs and other locations where matches were broadcast live. During the operations, the authorities confiscated around 150 betting tickets and 11,000 baht in cash.
Following these incidents, The Royal Thai Police has mandated units nationwide to crack down on gambling in football, with a particular emphasis on online betting rings and venues that broadcast the matches.
The public has issued reports about suspected gambling activities on designated gambling hotlines 191 and 1599.
In the previous year, almost three million young people in Thailand had engaged in online gambling, with debts reaching over 770 million baht, as reported by a survey conducted by Chulalongkorn University. According to the study, there were 5,010 young people aged 15 to 25 from 19 provinces who reported a widespread gambling problem among Thai youth.
