Dozens of foreign films are shot in Thailand every month.
Since the beginning of this year, 186 foreign films have been shot in Thailand, bringing in 3.192 billion baht from foreign film producers.
Thailand has earned nearly 3 billion baht from producing 186 foreign films shot in the country since January, government spokesman Chai Watcharong said, citing data from the Thailand Film Office.
The spokesman added that Thailand aims to become one of Asia’s top five countries in terms of film industry selection and that the country could receive 3.192 billion baht from foreign productions in the first five months of this year.
According to Chai, Thailand’s 47 provinces have served as filming locations for 186 films since the beginning of 2024. Most of them (46) were shot in January, followed by 45 in February, 41 in March, 39 in April and 15 in May, data from the Thailand Film Office showed.
Filmmakers from India made the most films in the Kingdom, with 22, while Japan was the most prominent sponsor, paying more than 68 million baht. Most films were shot in Bangkok, with 123 in the Thai capital.
‘The government promotes foreign film shoots in Thailand and aims to make the country a “filming-friendly destination” that will boost the economy, increase jobs and distribute income to all sectors,’ the spokesman added.
Chai cited the cash rebate policy as a significant success factor. In January, the Thailand Film Office announced that all films spending more than 560 million baht were eligible for a 15 percent discount.
The Thai Film Office also said foreign filmmakers could get another 5 per cent rebate if they promote ‘Thai soft power’ or have spent more than 150 million baht and started production on January 1. The maximum rebate is 150 million baht per project.
The spokesman also said Thailand’s culture minister, commerce minister and some Thai companies are cooperating to present Thai films at the Cannes 2024 Film Festival in France, which concludes on May 25.
Chai said Thai food and fabrics, especially pa kao ma (or Thai chequered cloth), will be showcased during the event in France, which will help bring the country up to a billion in revenue.
Famous films shot in Thailand in recent years include Fast and Furious 9, Tyler Rake: Operation Rescue, Boyhood 2: From Vegas to Bangkok, and Meg: Monster of the Deep.
